Yoshisuke Funasaka works in the media of the traditional Japanese woodblock print, He also makes silkscreen prints, sometimes combining both techniques into the same work. He is a classical master of modern Japanese abstract art, practicing a style of high geometric abstractions in strikingly strong or pastel colors. For about 20 years, Funasaka used to place the subtle shape of a lemon into his designs, but he abandoned this "trademark" some time in the mid 1970s, Funasaka was born in 1939 in the Gifu prefecture in Japan. In 1962 he graduated from the prestigious Tama University of Art. With the help of a government fellowship, the young artist continued his studies in England and in the U.S.A. In 1992 he returned to Tama University of Art, this time as a visiting lecturer for woodblock printmaking
