OKIIE HASHIMOTO       Japan 1899-1993

The cultural values of traditional Japan are still alive in the palaces, temples, gardens as well as the natural wonders of classic woodblock prints of Okiie Hashimoto who was born in 1899 in the coastal district of Chugoku-chiho at the southern end of the main island Honshu. Hashimoto pursued a classical study of art and painting for four years, graduating in 1923 from the College of Art in Tokyo. His artistic style emerged decisively after having met renowned woodcut artist Unichi Hiratsuka and was later accepted into his circle of artists. After teaching art full time at a middle school since 1925. Hashimoto's independent artistic career started relatively late. but he quickly achieved international fame for his woodcuts. He cherished old Japan with woodblocks of the historical Japanese buildings - whether palaces, gardens, temples or homes. The beauty of nature and rustic landscapes of Japan, today found only in a few untouched regions, attracted the interest of the artist. He used the old traditional Japanese stamp with the name "Oki" and "Hashi" for his signature.
