MARINUS FUIT  Netherlands  1934 -

Marinus Fuit lives in Haarlem and is an illustrator/painter and autodidactic. He was trained in lithography at the Amsterdam Graphic School.  In 1967 he had his first solo exhibition in Amsterdam. Initially a Cubist and Surrealist in the mid-60's Fuit developed his work into a personal expression of the absurd. Fuit paints large compositions with bright predominantly primary colors using graphic elements recognizable from everyday life. You'll find buildings, fences, a sea, blue sky, empty balconies, a pole, and they are delicately executed in bright compositions as a mathematical elaboration of strict forms and colors. The human figures which initially populated his work have disappeared. The emphasis has gradually shifted to objects in closed time, often located in coastal areas against blue skies. His highly disciplined technique is based on drawing using watercolor, gouache, India ink and  piëzografie. Fuit's work is instantly recognised but difficult to place in a box.
