LLOYD REES     Australia   1895 -1988  "A Tribute to Sydney"

Significant Australian landscape painter, and printmaker  Lloyd Rees was born in Queensland in 1895. He studied at

Brisbane Technical College with Godfrey Rivers and later travelled in the UK and Europe in the 1920s. In Europe he encountered the Tuscan countryside that would influence the sweeping, exposed landscapes of his later works. Rees worked in advertising in Brisbane and Sydney, before first

exhibiting his work in Sydney at  Macquarie Galleries in 1931. He often exhibited  in Australia, returning several times to Europe during his lifetime.  Rees was awarded the

Medaille de la Ville Paris in 1987.  Rees died in Hobart in 1988. Major surveys of his work were held in 1942 at the Art Gallery of new South Wales, 1993 at Heide and the Art Gallery of New South Wales and at the Brett Whiteley Studio in 2005.  An survey exhibition of Lloyd Rees work was held at Australian Galleries in 2004.
