GAIL ENGLISH       Australia     1939 -

Screenprints by Gail English sing with colour and a painterly language of loose geometric forms that seem to refer to the vastness of regional Australia, She plays out the tension between the undulating topography of nature and the hard edge boundaries of paddocks carved out by man. Working with the freedom of abstraction, she emulates the delicate tonality of the earth; fields of wheat, dust tracks, burnt stubble, ploughed dirt and the atmospheric effects of coastal vistas. These intuitive works may also be read as a mapping of inner landscapes, they infer fleeting emotional states as well as mutable weather. is well known for her abstract painting. These prints capture the colours and mood of the ever-changing landscape. Gail invites us into the harsh condition of the countryside, filled with dry paddocks, wheat fields, fence lines, floods and dusty tracks. Having grown up in the country near Young NSW, she presents visual memories, abstracted visions, and shares with us her connection to the land .“It’s the colours. It’s the smell of them, it’s mixing them, but chiefly it’s the colours”     Gail started her full-time career when she was in her fifties. Since then she has had many solo exhibitions and now has numerous collections around Australia. Gail was a finalist in the 2003, 2005 and 2007 Country Energy Art Prize and in

2008 won first place.
