DAVID LARWILL Australia 1956-2011
David Larwill was one of Australia's most important and distinctive artists. As the founder of the ROAR Studios in the early 1980's, Larwill and his fellow contemporaries broke away from the mercy of established galleries and sought to reinvent painting, producing expressive, vibrant works. Larwill's paintings are naïve, simplistic and direct, akin to the work of Basquiat in the 1980's. Larwill's feelings, moods and expressions are represented in each work by an innocent façade of frenetic compositions which often include tribal like figures and the incorporation of intense colour. Although the paintings are reminiscent of graffiti, child art and tribal art, they remain powerful, engaging and playful. Passing away in 2011 at the early age of 54, Larwill contributed significantly to the Australian art world with his work included in major collections such as the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne and the New Parliament House, Canberra.
