CHARLES BLACKMAN    Australia    1926 -   Butterflies

Through his engaging lithographs of butterflies, in a variety of colours and themes, Charles Blackman, exemplifies perfectly his mastery of graphics with simplistic detail of line and an atmospheric use of colour, delicacy and fragility in portraying these wonderful creatures, in many ways cross-pollinating with the wonderful, dream-like imagery of Blackman's acclaimed Alice in Wonderland series, and again using one of his favourite mediums, lithography. Blackman's colourful collection of butterflies demonstrates his power to make a single image some times sparse, some times austere - but always strong in power and suggestion.
